Deacon Brodie's Tavern - William Brodie was a deacon (president) who led a double life. He was an armed robber at night to pay for his gambling debts. He was hanged in 1788 on a new scaffold trapdoor mechanism of his own design. Some say his double life was the inspiration for Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde.
